Hi...  Sorry I have to post in English...  My German is nicht so good.

I have been having a persistent problem with dropped connections on my Cablecom service.  We have the high speed Internet and telephone running through the cable modem and a couple of times a night the connection is dropped, and the phone goes DEAD.  It seems to also happen when I am away at work, as when I come home in the evening the phone is dead and the connection has been dropped. I am using an SMC  2804 wireless router to share the connection with my roomate.  The problem seems to be worse when the wireless network is active, but dropped connections happen even when the wireless is turned off.

I live in 8003 and I remember someone posting about dropped connections in this area of Zurich before more but I can't find the post again, and I didn't fully understand it when I read it anyway!

Any advice anyone can offer would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance...  m

Are you running any P2P programs?

Yes.  Bittorrent.

But, I tried a few changes to the settings in the client, and eventually found that the problem happens whether I have it running or not.  It does seem to happen more often when Bittorrent is running, though.

maybe you got an old software in your cablemodem.
ask the cablecom support for a software flash or call the support anyway.

or disconnect the modem for a while. like one night to get a new ip address. the bittorrnet clients still trying to connect to your modem anyway. if you have bittorrnet running or not.

try to get a new ip address and let bittorrnet off.

Flippy...  Thanks for the advice.  I'll try disconnecting the modem tonight to get a new IP.  Do you know if there is any "safe" level of connections that I can allow for Bittorrent?  I need it to get my american TV fix!

note: disconnect the modem from power. :-)
or power down the computer or router instead of the cablemodem. both ways are working.

well, in former times i used edonkey and set the max connections to 230. some peopels set to 800 and more. that's to much.

hey matt...

I've got exactly the same problem... I'm using Bittornado and the connection drops all the time... Digiphone not working and stuff...
It's because the modem cannot handle the connections or something and just shuts down... I was trying to change the settings but it was no use so far...
Getting a new IP won't be any help too...
I think I will try another torrent-client and see if I can get it to work there (proabably azureus)
Anyway... this cablecom modem seems to be quite crappy...

Greetings,
Reto

Allright... I got the solution... use Azureus Bittorrent client and enable those two settings:
slowly connect new peer connections
use alternative socket polling

No disconnect ever since...

Greetings

Thanks to both flippy and e76 for the responses.

I have managed to go almost 24 hours without a dropped connection, but it is hard to say what exactly fixed the problem (if it is really fixed) since I have been changing a bunch of things all at once...  For other's reference, here is what I did:

I left the cable modem unplugged overnight.

I am using Azureus, and I have selected the "slowly connect" and "use alternative socket polling" options.  I also have cut back the global number of connections allowed to 100 and limited it to 30 KB/s max upload and 60 KB/s max download.

And, I found an update to the firmware for my router (SMC2804WBR V.2) on the SMC website and installed it.

So far so good with these settings.  I'll post an update in a few days...
